Passionate about creating accessibility?

Virtual Project Assistant

Contract Type: 1099 Contractor
Hours: 1 - 2 hours per week of virtual, live meetings and some administrative tasks.
Duration: 3 - 6 months
Location: Remote (USA)
Pay: $35 hour

This role is for someone who genuinely enjoys helping ideas take shape - the kind of person who hears someone brainstorm and instantly starts thinking, “Okay, how do we make that real?”

You’ll be working directly with Kris Joy (they/he), the founder of Advocates Empowered, to bring structure, organization, and accountability to a growing company with a big heart and even bigger mission. You can learn more about Kris through their Linkedin here, and their personal website here.

If you’re detail-oriented, grounded, and love helping creative visionaries stay on track, this might be your dream side gig.

Application closes on October 20th.

About Advocates Empowered

Advocates Empowered is a consulting and education company that helps organizations build workplaces where disabled and neurodivergent employees can thrive.

Through consulting, coaching, community and speaking, we partner with organizations to design environments that center Universal Design, Disability Justice and Intersectionality.

We believe in decolonizing the workplace - uplifting the experiences of the global majority, decentering whiteness, and building systems rooted in collective care, belonging, and accessibility.

We are seeking a grounded, detail-oriented person to join us as an Executive Support & Project Assistant. This person will help translate vision into action - supporting the founder with structure, accountability, and organization as the company expands its impact.

What You’ll Be Doing

This isn’t your typical “color-code the inbox and schedule my flights” kind of assistant role (though we will probably color-code for fun!)

Think of this more as a creative partnership in execution - you’ll be the person helping organize ideas, build momentum, and keep Kris accountable as they expand the reach and impact of Advocates Empowered.

Here are some projects that we are working on and how you would be able to help:

  • Project Management: Help plan, organize, and track ongoing initiatives like speaking engagements, workshops, and consulting projects.

  • Administrative Support: Scheduling, organizing files, and keeping timelines moving forward.

  • Social Media Support: Assist with launching an Instagram presence and brainstorm content ideas aligned with our mission.

  • Community Building: Help set up an online community to connect and empower our audience.

  • Content Development: Support the creation of educational videos, resources, and communication tools around accessibility and inclusion.

  • Systems & Tools: Help design a client tracking system and experiment with tools like Motion App alongside Kris.

  • Accountability & Planning: Join weekly virtual meetings to prioritize goals, make plans actionable, and keep everything moving forward.

What a Meeting with Kris Might Look Like

  • Verbal Processing: Kris does their best thinking out loud. You’ll listen, help organize thoughts, and ask clarifying questions to bring ideas into focus.

  • Action-Oriented Planning: You’ll help break down goals into steps and timelines - turning inspiration into structure.

  • Collaborative Problem-Solving: You’ll identify challenges together and propose practical ways to move through them.

  • Accountability & Follow-Through: Meetings always end with a clear list of next steps. You’ll help make sure nothing slips through the cracks.

  • Flexible Flow: Some weeks will be creative and idea-heavy, others will be all about task management and structure. Adaptability is key.

Who You Are

  • You have 2+ years of experience as a virtual assistant, project coordinator, or similar role, ideally in a creative, educational, or consulting environment.

  • You’re familiar with Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Calendar) and Canva, and open to learning new tools as we expand our technology.

  • You have strong communication skills - both written and verbal - and enjoy helping others organize, plan, and execute ideas.

  • You’re collaborative, thoughtful, and patient, able to hold space for verbal processing and help bring structure to creative or mission-driven work.

  • You’re self-directed and reliable, with a proactive approach to problem-solving.

  • You have access to a quiet space, reliable laptop and Wi-Fi setup to work remotely. We don’t care where you work, as long as your surroundings are not a distraction to you or your colleagues on the call.

  • You share a commitment to decolonizing the workplace, uplifting the experiences of the global majority, and creating equity for marginalized communities. Candidates who have direct lived experience with social justice, accessibility, neurodiversity, and queer inclusion are strongly encouraged to apply.
